California Breast Lift

ould I be a good candidate for breast lift surgery?
If you have good general health and are not planning any more pregnancies, and if you have:

  • Drooping breasts
  • Breasts lacking in substance
  • Downward-pointing nipples

you could be a good candidate for a breast lift.

The first thing to do is talk to an experienced cosmetic surgeon and get all your questions answered. You would want to have a good understanding of the breast lift procedure and a good understanding with your surgeon. Realistic expectations are always a prerequisite for any cosmetic surgery.

How is a breast lift done?
It will vary depending on the exact size and shape of your breasts, and the degree of sagging. This will all be discussed between you and your surgeon.

Typically the breast lift takes between 1-1/2 and 3-1/2 hours. The goal is to tighten the skin which has lost elasticity over the years, allowing the breast to droop.

  • Incisions are made to remove excess skin
  • The nipple and areola are shifted higher up, although still attached to underlying tissue
  • The skin is stitched to more tightly encase the breast tissue
  • A surgical bra or elastic bandage is applied

There’ll be swelling and bruising at first and any pain is controlled by a prescription from your plastic surgeon. The surgical bra or bandage will be replaced with a support bra to be worn day and night for a month or so. The stitches will dissolve by themselves.

Will a breast lift get rid of stretch marks?
Probably. When we become pregnant or gain weight, the breasts enlarge, stretching the skin. A stretch mark is actually a tear in an underneath layer of the skin. As the years flow by and gravity maintains its pull on us, the ligaments attaching the breast to the underlying muscle become weaker, so that the breast droops and stretches both the skin and ligaments further.

Cosmetic surgeons have found it difficult to effectively repair the ligaments, but the skin can be tightened. When excess skin is removed during the breast lift, some or all of the stretch marks will be removed along with it.

What incisions are made for a breast lift?
Depending on the exact nature of your breasts, there could be just 1, maybe 2, or rarely even 3 incisions made during your breast lift. If there are 3:

  • One will be around the areola
  • One will run down from the areola to the base of the breast , otherwise known as the "lollipop" incision
  • In rare cases an incision following the breast crease will be needed to remove more skin in situations were a large amount of extra skin is a possibility.

The incision depends upon the amount of droop. Skin is removed such that when the new edges are stitched closed, they tighten the lower side of the breast and lift it. The nipple and areola are shifted higher up on the breast, though they remain attached to breast tissue so that you can still breast feed later if you choose.

What kind of anesthetic is used for the breast lift procedure?
breast lift surgery can be done with general anesthetic, in which case you’ll be asleep and will have no memory of the procedure.
