Choosing a Breast Implant

hen choosing to have breast enlargement surgery, there are many options that you must consider. One of the biggest decisions you must make is what type of breast implant you would like. Breast implants can be saline or silicone, contoured or round, and textured or smooth.

These different types of breast implants are designed to change the shape and size of breast, and how the breast heals after the operation.

Saline or Silicone Breast Implants?

The difference between saline and silicone breast implants is the material that they are filled with. With the exception of polypropylene, all breast implants are made out of a silicone elastomer shell. Saline breast implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution, while silicone breast implants are filled with a silicone gel.

Saline breast implants vary in size, shape, and texture, and they are filled at the time of surgery. In the unlikely event that the breast implant breaks or ruptures, the body can safely absorb the saline solution.

Silicone implants are the most common type of breast implant in the United States. They are pre-filled with silicone gel, which means that the incision to place them must be larger than that for saline implants. Cohesive silicone gel, which is also a filler being used today, is firmer than other silicone gel. If the implant with cohesive silicone gel ruptures, the gel will not leak into the body, but will hold its integrity and stay inside the shell. There are advantages to both types of implants and Dr. Hendricks can help answer any questions you have about which type of implants to choose.

Round or Contoured Breast Implants?

Round breast implants are shaped like a ball, once they are placed behind the breast, they will not distort the shape of the breast if they turn or rotate in the implant pocket. Although some people claim that round implants are as natural looking as contoured implants, it depends on the size, shape, and existing tissue of the woman receiving the implant. Once in place, the round implant takes the same shape as that of a contoured implant.

Contoured breast implants, or anatomical implants, are shaped like a teardrop and were developed more for reconstruction purposes. They have found their way into cosmetic breast enlargement surgeries because many women would prefer contoured breast implants.

Contoured breast implants are shaped like a cone, with the bottom of the implant containing more of the filling material. All anatomical implants are textured in an effort to keep them from turning or rotating in the breast pocket. The pocket must be formed precisely, so a plastic surgeon experienced in placing contoured breast implants should perform this surgery.

Smooth or Textured Surface?

The shell of the breast implant can also be selected. Textured breast implants were developed to prevent capsular contracture and to remain stationary in the breast pocket created by Dr. Hendricks. The smooth breast implant is designed to move more freely in the breast pocket.

The difference between smooth and textured breast implants is that the surface of the textured breast implant is intentionally marred to make it more rough. Shells for textured implants must be thicker to accommodate the texture on the surface.

Smooth breast implants have a smooth surface, and are designed so that they can move within the breast pocket. For instance, if you have a round, smooth breast implant, it will be able to move and rotate within the breast pocket without distorting the appearance of the breast.

At the moment, there is no evidence showing that any one breast implant is better than another. The best way to determine which breast implant is best for you is to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Hendricks in Newport Beach, California. View before and after photos of breast implants.
