What to Expect During Breast Augmentation Surgery
Serving Newport Beach and Orange County, California
aving breast augmentation surgery done is not just a one step process. First you must schedule an initial consultation with plastic surgeon, Dr. Hendricks. During your initial consultation, he will help you decide on the type of breast augmentation surgery, the type of breast implant that will be used, and will answer any questions you have about the procedure.
Prior to the breast augmentation surgery, Dr. Hendricks will give you special instructions regarding what you should eat, whether you can smoke, and which medications or vitamins to avoid.
If the breast augmentation surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, you will sleep through the entire procedure.
Dr. Hendricks will perform the breast augmentation through the areola, inframammary crease, the transaxillary crease, depending on what you and he decided beforehand.
If you are having the breast augmentation surgery performed through the areola or with an inframammary crease incision, Dr. Hendricks will not need to use an endoscope for the procedure.
Whether you are getting subglandular, complete submuscular, or partial submuscular breast implants, the pocket will be created above, partially behind, or completely behind the muscle. After the pocket has been created, Dr. Hendricks will insert the breast implant.
If you are having silicone breast implants placed, they will be pre-filled. Saline implants are placed in the implant pocket and then filled with the sterile saltwater solution. The size of the incision will depend on the type of breast implant you choose.
Once the breast augmentation surgery is complete, Dr. Hendricks will close the incision and bandage the area to help with healing. The gauze will be removed within a few days, and you will need to wear a surgical bra as prescribed by Dr. Hendricks. Your stitches will be removed after a week or so and any swelling or bruising should subside after a couple weeks.
Normal activity can be resumed after a few weeks. You can return to work after a couple days depending on how strenuous your job is. And although your scars may never completely disappear, they will flatten and turn back to a normal color after a couple months.
A good plastic surgeon will not only work with you in deciding which type of breast augmentation surgery is right for you, but they will also help and monitor you during the recovery period. Make sure you ask your plastic surgeon about their involvement throughout the recovery period.
